i miss having a feeling of home. i haven’t felt like i’ve had a home in a long, long time. home has become such a distant feeling, and i don’t even know how to define it anymore. although i have some sort of home that i’ve built within myself, i catch myself longing for a tangible home. i door i can walk into and feel comfortable in.

generally i don’t often think about this because i try to be positive but sometimes i can’t help but address it. there is so many aspects of my heritage that i am so proud of. as a active and young native american woman who does her best to remember her culture in a culturally deprived city such as los angeles, i can’t help but take some things personally.

looking through various aspects of the media, be that music, art, news or whatever else it’s hard not to acknowledge the fact that my culture is missing in every way - in a contemporary sense and also historically. the closest thing that our culture has in the media that addresses our existence is fashion. urban outfitters and many other stores have obvious styles heavily influenced by native american culture. sometimes i find it flattering and nice that i can go to the store and buy things that identify my culture without having to go all the way to the reservation to buy things, but other times i find it… conflicting.

if our american society was putting us in the light not only for our aesthetic features but also for our spiritual and political ideals (if you can even call it that) then i would see it as a balanced and positive thing. however, when you neglect every other aspect of our culture, and do not properly educate the youth about not just the native history as a whole but also AMERICA’S history then i think that is dangerous.

the american government has failed to educate and keep promises related to native american’s. we are just another country who’s hands are covered in the blood of various peoples - mainly those of “color” be that any other race than “white”, but we constantly point the finger at other countries (i.e. germany and the holocaust) in a effort to distract the citizens of america from what is and what has been.

i find it disgusting to be apart of this country, and even more disgusting that my people, and so many other “races” have let themselves fall victim. more than anything i want my people, and all races to thrive in america, and to not use history as an excuse.
